Petition in support of Banksia stadium

09/05/2017

Dear families and players of the Ivanhoe Knights Basketball Club,

Many of you will be aware of the Banyule City Council (the council) project to build an indoor court facility on the old Banksia College site in Bellfield. The land was reserved for this purpose and the council put $7m aside while waiting for a further $5-6m to fund the project.

Recently, however, the council announced plans to instead support an indoor sports facility being built by La Trobe University near Kingsbury Drive, Bundoora.  As a result our club believes that the Banksia project – and the council funding dedicated to it – is now uncertain .

The Ivanhoe Knights Basketball Club Committee supports the La Trobe University project, but also wants the council to remain committed to the indoor court facility planned for the Banksia site. We believe all of these courts will be fully utilised in the future, given the projected growth of basketball in our region.

If you agree with this position, we urge you to sign the online petition started by local resident Ben Lloyd.

Go to the online petition to save the Banksia College site for basketball and community facilities.

Our committee recognises that there are many pressures on our elected councillors when they make decisions. We need them to understand the large need for indoor court facilities within our community – before they turn the Banksia site over to apartments.

Please sign the petition today.
