Statement from Ivanhoe Darebin Basketball Association

Print version (PDF)

The Ivanhoe Knights Basketball Club and the Darebin Basketball Association (the Darebin Giants) are pleased to announce they have merged to form the Ivanhoe Darebin Basketball Association (IDBA).

Under the merger, which was approved by Basketball Victoria recently, the two clubs are combining their resources to produce a competitive, inclusive, modern basketball association offering playing opportunities in junior and adult domestic competitions as well as the Victorian junior championship program.

The Ivanhoe Knights and the Darebin Giants will continue to field teams in their respective junior domestic competitions, as well as run junior development (hoops) programs, with no change to uniforms, operations or policies. The committees running the two clubs will also continue unchanged.

The Ivanhoe Darebin Basketball Association will be based at the Darebin Community Sports Stadium at 857 Plenty Road, Reservoir. It will run:

  • a junior championship program participating in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) – commencing next season
  • competitions for senior domestic players – currently a men’s competition on Monday nights and a mixed competition on Sunday nights.

For our players currently involved in junior domestic competitions – the Ivanhoe Knights in the Eastern Districts Junior Basketball Association (EDJBA) and the Darebin Giants in the Whittlesea Association – nothing will change.

If, however, a player wishes to take their basketball to a higher level, they will have the opportunity to play for the Ivanhoe Darebin Knights.

The junior championship (rep) program will provide a pathway for players from both clubs. Development opportunities will be shared, drawing on the best coaches from both sides, as well as providing an enhanced opportunity to recruit coaches from outside the clubs.

In coming months we aim to release details of:

  •  a new uniform for players in the junior championship program (rep players only)
  • a new website for the Association
  • events and training opportunities for our junior players.

The executive committee of the Ivanhoe Darebin Basketball Association combines officials from both clubs. Its members are: President Tim Butler, Vice President Rob Allen, Secretary Helen Kelaiditis, Treasurer Rob Sloan and general members Mark Sabbadini, Chris Wignall and Carl Ziebell.

We are excited to announce these developments and encourage our members and their families to contact us if they have any questions.
